All students in a shop class will be required to have this set of rules signed by their parents. Here are the top 5 on the list of 14 items:
1. SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT! NO PUSHING, SHOVING, RUNNING, ETC. IN THE SHOP AREA.
2. EYE PROTECTION MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHEN IN THE SHOP. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.
3. WORK SAFELY AND CAREFULLY. RUSHING MAY CAUSE INJURY TO YOU OR OTHERS.
4. OBSERVE ALL SAFETY RULES AND MAKE SURE OTHERS DO THE SAME.
5. STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE SHOP WITHOUT THE INSTRUCTOR PRESENT.
Consequences for not following the Shop Rules
Individuals who do not follow the shop rules will be verbally informed and the incident will be logged. A second violation of the same type will result in a phone call home to parents. A third violation will involve the parents, principals, and the possibility of removal from the class.
Personal Projects & Liability
I am open to students bringing in personally relevant projects to work on in class–it is motivating to the student and has a meaningful outcome. However, please note that the school may not be held liable if the student breaks, damages, or otherwise causes harm to these personal projects. Consider the example where a Personal Auto Care student brings in their own vehicle to replace break pads, but in the process does some damage to their break lines. I will help them repair this damage, but at the students time and expense.
Likewise, students from wood shop are welcome to make projects for their own use but the expenses for items not maintained in the shop will be their responsibility.
Attendance
It goes without saying that Industrial Technology classes are hands-on. As such, attendance is critical to completing projects. Students who miss class are encouraged to make up that time so as not to fall behind–understanding that I may have other demands on my time which make this difficult (but far from impossible).
Grading
For most classes grades will fall into one of three categories: Projects, Tests/Quizzes, and Responsibility. Projects may be long term and graded at intervals, though in most cases they will be graded at there completion. A rubric will grade on the following subjects: Design, Fabrication, Finish, Safety, and Shop Respect. Tests/Quizzes will be given at several times during the course. They may include safety quizzes over equipment being used, over the names and uses of tools, or over specific subject matter such as types of wood, welding concepts, or automotive systems. Responsibility is a weekly 10pt grade based on student behavior and preparation for class during that week. Students are responsible for coming prepared, paying attention, being safe around equipment, and respecting the shop and its equipment.
